Conflict Resolution Graduate Program
Public Safety
Portland State University Campus Public Safety is an on campus security organization. Campus Public Safety provides assistance to visitors and employees as well as students and encourages positives relationships with other Portland State University organizations. The Student Center for Dispute Resolution and Portland State University Campus Public Safety maintain a cooperative working relationship. The goal of this understanding is to establish an alternative dispute resolution mechanism for certain interpersonal student conflicts on campus that are currently handled as criminal or disciplinary matters. Campus Public Safety officers decide if these disputes are appropriate for mediation and will refer students to the Student Center for Dispute Resolution. Referrals may be made wen a campus safety officer believes that informal resolution may be more appropriate than disciplinary or criminal interventions.
Ombuds Office
The Ombuds office is a confidential, impartial, independent, and informal alternative for the resolution of problems and concerns, particularly those that are not adequately addressed through regular channels. The Ombuds staff pursue quiet avenues of diplomacy, negotiation, and mediation in an effort to find conciliatory solutions to situations that seem to involve unfairness. The Ombuds office keeps no permanent records other than aggregate statistical summaries since the office in not a place of notice or "record keeper" for PSU. Members of the campus community who feel that they are not being treated fairly can safely initiate discussion in the Ombuds office on any university related topic. Our services are free and available to all students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
SLMS
Student Legal and Mediation Services focuses on conflicts where there is a legal issue to be resolved. If both parties agree to mediate, SLMS can assist in resolving issues related to divorce, custody, adoption, and contracts, among other issues. At least one party to the mediation must be a PSU student and both parties must clearly indicate that they are seeking mediation services from SLMS during the initial contact with SLMS or inquiry about the service. Students carrying at least four undergraduate credits or three graduate credits are eligible for free mediation services at SLMS.
CAPS
The Center for Student Counseling and Psychological Services staff is available to help students cope with emotional stresses caused by conflict. CAPS is dedicated to maintaining students emotional health, thus empowering the student to achieve academic success and experience healthy and satisfying relationships in a supportive campus community.
Affirmative Action

The Affirmative Action office can facilitate informal complaint resolution, investigate formal complaints of discrimination, and assist with and oversee hiring processes to ensure affirmative action guidelines are followed. The Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity office encourages students to come in for consultation about any discrimination complaint. Staff will explain the options open to the student, and will work with the student to resolve the problem or issue to the student's satisfaction.
